Shasta County’s Board of Supervisors adopted a resolution giving the Public Works Director, or a designee, authority to temporarily close lanes or portions of county roads for periodic Ironman Group athletic events, according to the county’s resolution text.
The measure is tied to California Vehicle Code section 21101(e) and sets conditions for any closure. The Ironman Group must obtain an encroachment permit under county code, submit a traffic-control plan for approval, give written notice to the Sheriff’s Office, the California Highway Patrol and SHASCOM, carry at least $2 million in commercial general liability coverage, and clean up litter and refuse within 24 hours after an event, the resolution says.
The resolution also allows the closure authority to be revoked if public health, safety or welfare requires it, or if permit conditions are violated. The county’s staff report said the policy is intended to support event safety and traffic management.
A separate staff report said the first proposed event is an Ironman 70.3 race planned to begin annually in August, with a course that would use Whiskeytown Lake, county roads in Old Shasta, Keswick, Bella Vista and Palo Cedro, and the Sacramento River corridor. That report also said county administrative and legal reviews were completed and that the city of Redding and Caltrans were working on portions of the route within their jurisdictions, but it did not include a vote tally.
