Humboldt County supervisors approved the county’s purchase of the former Kmart property at 4325 Broadway Street in Eureka on June 9, voting 4-1 to move ahead with the deal.
Public Works said the site could become a one-stop permitting center and might also house Public Works, Planning and Building, Environmental Services and, potentially, weights and measures, according to the meeting summary from the June 9 board meeting. Supervisors also heard concerns during the hearing about the property’s location in or near the tsunami hazard area, access, maintenance costs and the county’s ability to finish and care for the space.
Supervisor Bone voted no on the purchase. The summary does not detail the full purchase price, financing terms or any conditions attached to the approval.
The property purchase came during a meeting that also included proclamations and recognitions, including Elder Abuse Awareness Month, a retirement resolution for Rio Dell Fire Chief Shane Wilson, a 125th anniversary recognition for the Eureka Elks Lodge No. 652 and a Pride Month proclamation. The board also received its proposed fiscal year 2026-27 budget presentation later in the meeting.
