Shasta County’s recommended FY 2026-27 budget calls for a countywide staffing reduction of 33 full-time equivalents, with the largest cuts in Health and Public Assistance and additional reductions in Probation and public safety units, according to the county’s Position Allocation List.
The staffing table shows recommended county positions falling to 2,046 FTEs from 2,079 in the current-year column, while the budget overview says the recommended budget totals $658,007,233, down 3.99% from the FY 2025-26 adopted budget.
Within the staffing plan, Health and Public Assistance shows the biggest reduction, down 24 FTEs to 1,013. Probation is down 5 FTEs to 85, and the public safety subtotal falls by 5 FTEs to 454. The budget overview says the Sheriff’s Office will hold five positions vacant for the full year and one for half the year, the District Attorney will hold two positions vacant for the full year, and the Probation Department deleted five positions permanently from its roster.
The budget overview says the county is facing tighter discretionary revenue and that reserves are below target. It also says the Board of Supervisors approved budget principles in February that include continued controlled hiring, denial of new programs or positions without clear revenue support, review of grant-funded positions, and recommending deletion of positions vacant for more than 12 months.
Budget hearings are scheduled for June 9-11, with the budget overview and county administration presentations set for June 9, HHSA on June 10, and public safety and criminal justice departments on June 11, followed by open public hearings and public comment, according to the hearing schedule.
