The Shasta County Air Pollution Board voted Aug. 25 to set the AB 2766 motor vehicle registration fee at $5 per paying registered vehicle, after staff said the state Department of Motor Vehicles would otherwise round an earlier $4.25 amount down to $4.
Air Quality District Manager Rob Stahl told the board the district had first approved a move from $3 to $4.25 on June 8, but the DMV asked for a whole-dollar amount before collecting and distributing the fee. He said the revised $5 charge would keep the intended revenue level for air-quality work, including Carl Moyer Program match funding, replacement of older equipment and possible electric-vehicle charging projects.
During the public hearing, Stahl said the district had used the AB 2766 funding stream for emissions-related projects and had also been approached by RABA about possible grant support for bus charging stations.
The board approved the resolution 3-1, according to the meeting transcript. The item takes effect April 1, 2027.
Afterward, board members also agreed to bring back for more information a separate governance question raised during public comment about the district’s relationship with the county and the role of the air pollution control officer.
