The Redding City Council unanimously appointed Michael Webb as interim city manager at its July 21 meeting, following the unexpected death of City Manager William Tarbox on July 19, according to a city announcement.
Webb had been serving as assistant city manager/director of public works and executive director of the Redding Area Bus Authority before the appointment. In the city’s announcement, Webb said he would work to ensure continuity of services and support city staff, council priorities and the community.
The council also approved resolutions naming Robert “Hank” Schreeder as interim police chief of the Redding Police Department. The city said Schreeder was selected by Tarbox and is expected to begin Aug. 3, 2026, remaining in the role until a permanent chief is chosen and takes command.
According to the city, Schreeder brings nearly four decades of law enforcement leadership experience, including 28 years with the Santa Rosa Police Department and six years as police chief before retiring in 2019. Since then, the city said, he has served in interim law enforcement leadership roles in Emeryville and Novato.
The announcement said the city has already completed its review of applications for a permanent police chief and is interviewing candidates now. Officials expect to name a permanent chief by October.
