The City of Redding said Monday that City Manager William Tarbox died unexpectedly on Sunday, July 19, setting up an immediate leadership transition for the city government.

In a city announcement, officials said the Redding City Council is expected to consider appointing an interim city manager at its meeting Tuesday, July 21. The city did not name a candidate for the interim role in the announcement.

Tarbox had taken the job in February 2026 after moving his family from the Bay Area, according to the city. The announcement described him as a dedicated public servant whose short tenure nevertheless had an impact on the city’s direction.

The city also said it is asking for privacy for Tarbox’s family and said condolences may be brought to Redding City Hall for delivery to them.
