Wheatland moved ahead May 26 with a rewrite of its accessory dwelling unit rules after staff said the city’s 2021 ordinance no longer matches state law or a Dec. 5, 2025 technical-assistance letter from the California Department of Housing and Community Development.
According to the council packet, the proposed ordinance would update chapters and code sections covering ADUs and junior ADUs, including items such as permitting timelines, parking standards, size definitions, owner-occupancy limits and treatment of unpermitted units. The packet also says the Wheatland Planning Commission unanimously recommended approval at its May 5 meeting.
At the May 26 council meeting, members held a public hearing on the proposed accessory dwelling unit ordinance amendment, introduced the measure and waived first reading, according to the meeting minutes.
The record provided here does not include final ordinance language or any changes that may have been made before adoption. It also does not show whether members of the public raised objections or requested amendments during the hearing.
