Shasta County staff are asking supervisors to move ahead with Zone Amendment 25-0003, a revised accessory dwelling unit ordinance that would repeal and replace the county’s current ADU section.
According to the staff report, the update is meant to align county rules with state law and with updated guidance from the state Housing and Community Development Department, which staff says has asked the county to update or repeal the existing ordinance.
The main policy change would remove the county’s size tie to the primary residence for detached ADUs. Under the revised language, detached units could reach 1,200 square feet outright, rather than being limited by the size of the main home.
The report says the Planning Commission recommended the revised ordinance on July 9, 2026, in Resolution No. 2026-014, after earlier commission action on a prior draft. Staff also says the proposal is consistent with the county General Plan and with Housing Element Program HG-3, item D.
The staff report says the ordinance would not be subject to CEQA under cited statutory and categorical exemptions. It also notes that no public comments had been received when the report was prepared.
The record provided does not show whether supervisors adopted the ordinance, deferred it, or sent it back for more changes after the Aug. 25 hearing.
