Shasta County staff are recommending that supervisors remove Steve Kerns from the District 3 seat on the county Planning Commission, declare the seat vacant and receive Supervisor Harmon’s nomination of Kevin Butler.
In a staff report for the Aug. 25, 2026 Board of Supervisors meeting, staff also ask for a follow-up item to formally appoint Butler to the remainder of the term, which runs through Jan. 15, 2029.
The report says the Planning Commission handles matters including general plan amendments, zoning and subdivision review. It cites county code as the authority for removing a commissioner and filling a vacancy, and says nominations for new appointments must be made at least six days before the appointment meeting.
The report describes Butler as a District 3 resident and a licensed civil engineer. A separate county application excerpt says he cited nearly 30 years of experience in Shasta County and said that experience could help guide county planners and the Planning Commission on growth.
The staff report says the County Administrative Office reviewed the recommendation and that appointment-related costs were included in the Clerk of the Board budget for fiscal 2026-27. The available record does not show what action supervisors took at the Aug. 25 meeting.
