The Humboldt County Board of Education unanimously approved a series of actions at its May 13 meeting in Eureka, including retirement-incentive window periods, a contract with California State Parks, updated bylaws and intent to apply for a literacy grant.
According to the board’s May 13 minutes, trustees adopted resolutions approving both the PERS and STRS golden handshake window periods. The minutes say the board also approved a resolution allowing the county office of education to enter into a contract with California State Parks for the State Park Partner Schools project. Rosie Slentz, the director of learning support services, told the board the agreement is part of a statewide effort to encourage schools to visit state parks.
The board also approved updated bylaws on remuneration and reimbursement, meetings and notices, agenda and meeting materials, and meeting conduct. The board waived a second reading and adopted Bylaw 9320.1 on remote meetings and attendance at the same meeting.
In another unanimous vote, trustees approved intent to apply for the Innovative Approaches to Literacy grant. Slentz said the grant’s goal is to get books into the hands of students in low-income areas, and the minutes list a requested award amount of $650,000 per year for five years.
The meeting also included a proclamation honoring Trustee Robert Siekmann for 50 years of service, public comment, and a superintendent’s report recognizing award recipients and student achievements. The agenda and minutes both show the meeting was held at the Humboldt County Office of Education’s Annex Conference Room at 901 Myrtle Ave. in Eureka.
