The Assembly Labor and Employment Committee advanced SB 947 on a 5-0 vote Tuesday, sending the measure to the Assembly Privacy and Consumer Protection Committee after extended testimony over how employers use artificial intelligence to schedule, discipline and monitor workers.

Supporters told lawmakers that algorithmic management can intensify productivity demands, increase injuries and stress, and generate automatic firing paperwork, while opponents argued that corroboration, data access and independent-contractor issues remain unresolved, according to the June 10 committee hearing audio.

The hearing made the bill newsworthy even though the policy dispute remained unresolved. It also reflected a broader labor-policy debate in California over workplace surveillance and automated management systems.

The committee record available here does not include the bill text, amendments or individual member explanations for the vote.
