The California Assembly voted 42-15 on Thursday to waive its normal floor-amendment deadline and keep amendments open until 5 p.m. Friday, Aug. 21, a procedural move that could affect late-session bill language as the chamber worked through a crowded floor file.
According to the Assembly floor session transcript, Majority Leader Aguiar Curry asked unanimous consent to suspend the amendment-submission deadline and allow floor managers to submit technical, contingent enactment and chaptering amendments by the Friday cutoff, at the speaker’s discretion. Assemblymember Hoover withheld unanimous consent and requested a roll call, and the clerk later announced 42 ayes and 15 noes.
The same session included a warning that 163 Senate bills still lacked floor managers, underscoring the amount of unfinished business still ahead of lawmakers. The transcript said members should continue working with the Senate to identify floor managers for their bills and encourage those already assigned to request floor hearings.
The Assembly returned to substantive work after the vote, moving through a long series of bills and concurrence items before adjourning until Monday, Aug. 24 at 1 p.m., according to the transcript summary and session record.
The floor action did not identify which measures might receive late amendments under the waiver.
